1Hour, 1 Day, 1 Year~ Join Our Mentoring Challenge
As I stated in a previous post, we are partnering with Tara Correll of See No Color and challenging you to join our Mentoring Challenge. We are personally going to be involved in some way to give back to the youth in our communities. Tara has committed to mentoring a teen girl for one year. She is also a speaker and coach that hosts workshops for at risk and disadvantaged youth in the Seattle, WA area. Women Are Gamechangers has decided to be involved with several organizations in the Houston, TX area. I (Vernetta) will be speaking at a few conferences and events for youth. WAGC feels that we can empower other women in the Houston area to join in and find an organization that fits your needs. I have found a few organizations to feature during our Mentoring Challenge that we have or will be involved with. These are just a few of the numerous organization across the country you can take part in. Two great resources are United Way and Black Celebrity Giving that either list or feature a non-profit. If none of the organizations on our list fit your interests, please use our resources to find one that does.
We will post an album on our Facebook page to show the readers and fans in the WAGC and See No Color communities who are taking part in our Mentoring Challenge. You can send a picture of you and a staff member or at the event (no kids, please. Privacy is important in order to protect their identity!) to gamechangers@womenaregamechangers.com. We will then post your picture to our Facebook page. Don’t forget to add your name and the name of the organization you volunteered with. We hope to have a huge turn out. Like the title says; you can commit to 1 hour, 1 day or 1 year. Whichever fits your schedule.
So here are the organizations you can get involved with in Houston, TX. (WAGC has either personally begun working with these organizations or will in the very near future.) Quick reminder: You may need to do a background check if you are directly involved with children.
***WAGC and See No Color will be guests on the Twitter Chat hosted by Black Celebrity Giving next Thursday 9/8c. Please join us and tell others. We’ll answer your questions and tweet about our Mentoring Challenge. Use hashtag #giveback. Follow all 3 of us Thursday, March 29 @ 9/8c. Here are our twitter names: WAGC @womengamechange See No Color @TaraCorrell Black Celebrity Giving @BlkCelebGiving***

Black Celebrity Giving goes all over the country spotlighting non profits headed by celebrities and non celebrities.
- CLEE Conference~ I will be a speaker and panelist tomorrow. YAY!!! Excellent TEEN Choice was founded and is lead by our first Gamechanger Sharon Roberson-Jones. I’m really excited and nervous. (You know teens can be harsh if you don’t come correct. They do talk like that right? Oh lawd, I need to know slang by tomorrow. lol) This free conference has workshops on character (which is the topic I will be discussing along with another speaker), leadership, education and entrepreneurship. I love that the youth who attend and are involved with ETC will have the opportunity to be taught about entreprenuership. Don’t you? Read more about the CLEE Conference.
- Precious Babies, Inc.~ I was contacted last week about this organization. They are having a fundraiser May 12, 2012 from 2pm-5pm. This organization provides assistance and education to expectant or teen parents. Their programs range from spreading the message of Abstinence-Plus to teens through their Prevent Teen Pregnancy program, as well as helping teen parents develop a life plan and gain adequate parenting skills to nurture their infants through the Teen Moms and Male 2 Male programs. If you would like to donate to this organization or help in any way go to their website www.preciousbabies.org for more information.
- V-STAR~ This is another organization led by one of our Gamechangers Pernilla Higgins. VSTAR will be launching their mentoring component and are currently looking for Mentors as well as volunteers! They have a girls lock in planned this spring for the launch! One day dance clinics are also quickly approaching. Confirmed dates are June 9th from 9am-12pm and June 22 from 8-3. In addition, there will be a dance recital June 2; no volunteers needed but your support is welcomed. Lastly, summer dance camps are scheduled for July 2-7 and July 16-27. All camps are scheduled from 8am-5pm daily. To sign up to volunteer or to become a mentor with V-STAR head over to their website www.YouAreVstar.org and sign up today!
- The Cinderella-Cinderfella Project~ I attended a fundraiser a few weeks ago for this organization. It was so nice to see women collect so many dresses, shoes, accessories, etc for girls to have a memorable prom. They are looking for mentors to help the girls (and boys) get ready for prom and you get to meet them at a social reception. For more information and to sign up to volunteer, www.cinderella-cinderfella.org.
And yes, WAGC has or will assist each of this organizations in some way. Whew! Busy, busy, busy but so worth it when we get to see the appreciation of the people we will help.
Are you up for the challenge?
